Cheap road access

A recent undercover report by the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) found 11 175 fake learner and drivers’ licences had been issued across Johannesburg over a six-year period. Potential motorists can purchase a licence for anywhere between R800 and R4 500.

According to Helen Szemerei, CEO at IntegriSure, this is particularly alarming as motorists who purchase a licence are likely to do so because they are not able to pass the actual test. “It is extremely concerning that we have thousands of motorists on the roads who are either inexperienced or simply do not have the appropriate driving skills to pass the test.
“Anyone with a fake driving license is essentially committing fraud. Should they be involved in an accident then not only will their insurer not pay out on a claim, but they could also find themselves uninsurable - not just on motor insurance abut other forms of insurance as well.”
