Towing care

On a recent Carte Blanche program there was a television insert about towing operators and what happens at the scene of a car accident. “In the event of an accident it’s often difficult to keep a clear head. You risk having your vehicle damaged by a disreputable service provider and signing documentation that may leave you open to being charged excessive towing and storage costs,” advises Debbie Donaldson, MD Personal Lines at FNB Insurance Brokers.

While she has specific advice for her clients, readers are encouraged to review their own motor insurance arrangements and check with their respective brokers or insurer concerned about what back up services they include in their offering for clients involved in accidents.
She goes on to stress the following important points, specifically for FNB Insurance Broker customers:
The first thing to do when involved in an accident is immediately to call HelpU 24/7 Roadside Assist on 0860 645 801. This number is on your ‘Do not tow’ sticker. “Call us anytime and we will dispatch an approved service provider to assist you.”
Should your insured vehicle be involved in an accident HelpU 24/7 Roadside Assist will take care of all the necessary arrangements, including:
• Arranging for your vehicle to be towed to an approved Autobody Repairer;
• Advising you on procedures to follow, e.g. recording the accident and obtaining the necessary information;
• Contacting the SAPS or traffic authority on your behalf;
• Immediately start with the claims process.

If anyone else was involved in the accident get as much information as possible from the other party, as well as the names and contact details of anyone who witnessed it. This will speed up the claim settlement process.
Before rendering any service, HelpU 24/7 Roadside Assist will need to verify your membership, so be sure to keep your vehicle registration details handy.
With HelpU 24/7 Roadside Assist you won’t be left in the lurch. Call us any time on 0860 645 801 for round-the-clock assistance.
